Montreal, Canada - The Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs named Michele Levesque as its representative to the African Union (AU), informed sources told APA Monday in Montreal.

Ms. Levesque will combine her new role with the title of ambassador of Canada to Ethiopia, with concurrent accreditation to Djibouti.

"The accreditation of Ms. Levesque to the African Union showcases that Canada is committed to deepening its relations with the organization in areas such as peace and security, conflict resolution, good governance and economic development," said Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon, commenting on the appointment.

Ambassador Levesque will also play an important role in advancing the ongoing commitment of Canada and increase its cooperation in these areas.

"The African Union is playing a leadership role throughout the continent and remains a valuable partner for Canada," she said.

Ambassador Levesque presented her credentials to the chairperson of the African Union Commission Jean Ping on 16 November at the headquarters of the Pan-African integration institution in Addis Ababa.
