East African Community Council urges business community to exploit bigger markets

Kampala, Uganda - The Chairperson of the East African Community Council of Ministers and Minister of the East African Cooperation of Tanzania, Diodorus Kamala has urged the business community in the region to vie for the bigger EAC market rather than concentrating on internal markets which are limited and at times not economically viable .

According to a release from the community headquarters on Tuesday, the minister made the call on Monday in Bujumbura, Burundi where he opened a Trade, Business and Investment Forum on Monday 7 December 2009 at the Novotel, in Bujumbura, Burundi.

SADC ends Zimbabwe economic rescue program

Harare, Zimbabwe - The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has handed over the activities of the Zimbabwe Humanitarian and Development Assistance Framework to the Zimbabwean government, formally ending a year-long economic bailout programme under which the 15-nation regional bloc came to the aid of its ailing neighbour.

The Zimbabwe Humanitarian and Development Assistance Framework was launched in Harare in January as a mechanism through which assistance given to the country could be distributed to the people in a transparent and non-partisan manner.

ECOWAS trade negotiation seminar opens in Liberia

Monrovia, Liberia - A five-day trade negotiation capacity building seminar under the auspices of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) through the Community's trade negotiation capacity building (TNCB) project, has got underway in the Liberian capital Monrovia, APA learned Tuesday.

The seminar organized by Liberia's Ministry of Commerce and Industry, drew its participants from the ministries of commerce, finance, the Liberia Chamber of Commerce and national trade unions. The participants among others, will be trained on how to negotiate trade, something the organizers observed, Liberia was lagging behind in as a member of the global community.

Egyptian-Nigerian business council established in Cairo

European Union earmarks 35 billion CFA franc for Burkina Faso to reduce poverty

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso - The European Union has allocated 35 billion CFA francs to Burkina Faso, in support of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to halve poverty by 2015, APA learns Saturday at the Ministry of Economy and Finance in Ouagadougou.

This disbursement follows the signing in May 2009 of an agreement between Burkina Faso and the European Union by which the latter undertook to support the government of Burkina Faso in its efforts towards economic growth and fight against poverty for a six-year period (2009-2014).
