Nairobi, Kenya - Muslim leaders and family members of suspected terrorist Mohammed Abdulmalik who is being held at the United States military detention cells in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on Sunday demanded for his repatriation, local media reported.
The leaders says that with the near closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp as announced by US President Barrack Obama, Abdulmalik should be brought back to Kenya.
Abdulmalik who was in the list of United States wanted terrorists was arrested by Kenya’s anti-terrorism police and handed over to Federal Bureau of Investigation(FBI) four years ago in connection with the Kikambala hotel bombings in the coastal city of Mombasa in which at least 15 people died. His elder sister Mwanajuma Rajab told state owned Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) television in Nairobi that the government had refused to repatriate the suspect despite the FBI declaring that he was innocent. Mwanajuma showed the press a letter sent to her by the suspect while still in Guantanamo Bay detention which had requested her to plead with the government to accept him back. Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK) Organizing Secretary Sheikh Khalifa Mohamed said that Abdulmalik should be brought back to face charges for any atrocities committed. The US government is said to have admitted on March 26, 2007 that it was holding Abdulmalik in detention without trial. Source: APA |
