Lagos, Nigeria - The Nigerian government has released more than N80 million (about US$520,000) for the construction of the first phase of the Ozone Village at Ikene Local Government Area of Ogun State in south-western Nigeria.

The Assistant Director of the National Ozone Office of the Environment Ministry, Mr Abdulkasim Bayero, told journalists on Tuesday in Abuja that the concept of the project was to have an ozone-friendly technology development and training outfit.

"What we intend to achieve by establishing the ozone village is to have a centre where various types of ozone-friendly technologies will be constructed and it will also serve as an indigenous capacity centre.

"The Ozone village is just a title to make it unique. It will be expanded in the long run to general environmental protection technology,'' he said.

He said some indigenous engineers had fabricated various technologies that were ozone-friendly such as the prototype box foam machine.

Others, he said, were the hydrocarbon machine and the Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) recovering and recycling local machine.

"All these will be showcased at the ozone village. They have been completed and will be assembled in the village,'' he said.

He said the equipment house, office blocks and generators were already in place.

Bayero added that d the project would be completed in five years, adding that it would go a long way in providing jobs and attracting foreign exchange through technology export.
