Senegal’s best-known musician Youssou Ndour was appointed Culture and Tourism minister on Wednesday evening in his country’s new government led by Abdoul Mbaye, a well-known banker, whom head of State Macky Sall appointed Prime Minister the day before.
Ndour, whose presidential candidature had been rejected by the country’s Constitutional Council, had set up a civil society movement called ‘Feke Maci Bole’ (I am involved). In the second round of the presidential election, Youssou led an intense campaign of protest against the regime of outgoing President Wade and threw his weight behind Macky Sall. The mega-star who owns a press group called Futurs Medias, consisting of a TV channel (TFM), a radio station (RFM) and daily newspaper (L’Observateur), had put his musical career in the back burner, to devote his energy to the election campaign.
